Jun 09, 2017 · I ordered a brass mould from Accurate Moulds, #AM379255L several years back. I've used the air-cooled, soft-cast bullets (clip on wheel weights) with gas check, in several original Winchester 1894 38-55's and one original Marlin 1893 38-55.

The 38-55 used a 255 grain bullet that had a muzzle velocity of 1285 feet per second. Various higher velocity factory loadings were offered at different times, one with the same bullet at 1550 feet.

The replacement 1894 Winchester Rear Peep Sight I went to the range with a box of factory .38-55 Winchester ammunition. With its 255 grain round that measured at .375” it was going to be interesting.

The.38-55 Winchester cartridge (actually.3775 caliber) was introduced in 1876 by Ballard. It was used by Marlin Firearms from 1875 on for various single-shot target rifles and their 1893 lever action rifle. It was later offered by Winchester in its Model 1894.

If you want a top velocity in the 45-70, a case full of 4198 and a 400 grain bullet will not disappoint. Other straight cases from the 32-40 and the 38-55 to the 458 work well with the 4198 reloading.
